New Macomb mall adds 20 retailers

The Detroit News

The list of retailers that will call The Mall at Partridge Creek home grew Monday, with mall owner Taubman Centers Inc. announcing more than two dozen additional stores that have signed to open at the new open-air shopping center in Clinton Township.

Nearly half of the newly announced stores and eateries will be unique to Macomb County, and six will be Michigan firsts, Bloomfield Hills-based Taubman Centers said.

Local retail analysts said the array of stores indicates the developer and national retailers have confidence in Metro Detroit's suburban retail market, even as the state continues to lose jobs and real estate values sink.

"There's still a tremendous amount of money in the area," said Ed Nakfoor, a Birmingham-based retail consultant. "People are still shopping."

Anchored by Nordstrom, Parisian and MJR Cinema 14, Partridge Creek is scheduled to open Oct. 18. The Nordstrom store will open in April 2008.

The stores new to Michigan, announced Monday, include:

  • Sur La Table, offering culinary items.

  • Calvin Klein, which will open one of its first free-standing stores in the U.S.

  • The Territory Ahead, which designs and develops its own active lifestyle line of casual men's and women's apparel and accessories.

  • Pizza Rustica, offering quick-service gourmet pizza and a create-your-own salad.

  • Cacique, plus-sized intimate apparel.

  • Shi by Journeys, footwear and fashion accessories for women in their mid-20s to early 30s from popular shoe retailer Journeys.

The stores new to Macomb County include:

  • Moonstruck Chocolate Cafe, whose only other Michigan Cafe opens in September at Taubman's Twelve Oaks Mall. It offers chocolates and chocolate drinks.

  • For Love 21, an accessories store from the Forever 21 chain, which will open its first Michigan stores at Taubman's Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills and Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi this fall -- just before opening at Partridge Creek.

  • BEBE SPORT, street wear and performance apparel by bebe.

  • Illuminations, candles and candle accessories.

  • Stephen James Aveda Salon/Spa, a salon, spa and retail store, featuring Aveda products.

  • Nine West, women's footwear and accessories.

Other new eateries announced Monday include:

  • Auntie Anne's, Godiva Chocolatier, Starbucks and Surf City Squeeze. They join previously announced restaurants: Bar Louie, Brio Tuscan Grille, California Pizza Kitchen, Marble Slab Creamery and P.F. Chang's China Bistro, Max & Erma's and Nestli Toll House Cafe by Chip.

    Other stores announced:

  • bebe, Claire's, Forever 21, GameStop, Guess?, Lane Bryant, LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, Things Remembered and Trade Secret.

The theater complex by MJR Theatres will include 14 screens with 2,500 stadium-style seats.

Farmington Hills retail consultant Ken Dalto said Partridge Creek's attraction to retailers reflects the increasing importance of Macomb County consumers to Michigan retailers.

"That's the fastest growing upper-end area in Metro Detroit," Dalto said. "That population can definitely sustain the business."

Nakfoor said Monday's announcement doesn't represent a high-end breakthrough in the regional market, but fills in Macomb County's long-time gap in upper mid-range retail.

"It's not going to represent what Southeast Michigan doesn't have, just what Macomb County doesn't have," he said. "But I wouldn't say that anyone's overstepping the market."
